4 point harness mounting points
red_five - 30/10/02 at 09:47 PM

Can someone please email me a photo or sketch of the best mouting points for the 4 point harness (lower points). Once I've put these supports in I'm ready to paint.

Just put then on my Chassis last night.

Put them to the rear of M1/M2 tubes under the rear trailing arm mounts.

You may have to cut some metal out of the brakets.

Make the moutings out of 20mm steel rod and drill & tap to sut.

Wil try and post some pic's soon.

They look good, and it's a great idea. Have you taken the car through an SVA test? I thought there was a required 3mm plate to strengthen the mounting points?

John
They are the same as my MK chassis,i've not heard of any failing SVA.

Does anyone know of a supplier of the eyelets and threaded tube?
COuld do the tubes myself, btu time is short so don't mind buying pre-fabricated

demon tweeks do the eye bolt for £1.40 and £1 for the plate

The is no supplier of the threaded tube.

You'll just have to make it yourself.

It's worth spending some time on this to ensure your safety.

According to the Willans Harness instructions the lap mounting points should be vertically down from your hips when in seat in driving position.

I used a six point harness for myself for road and track after much messing with four point. The trouble with placing the lap mountings back at an angle is that when you try to tighten the shoulder straps the lap straps move up into a dangerous position. The further back from your hips the mounting, the more dangerous the lap position as you tighten the shoulder straps.

In the book position a four point when tightened on shoulder straps will ride up almost to lower chest area.

The correct lap belt portion position is across the hips.

The six point helps avoid all this as it obviously cannot be pulled up far by the shoulder straps because of the lower straps tightening. I find in competition that I can be tightened right down and be safe. For road use i can slightly slacken the shoulder straps for ease of movement.

The passenger 4 point is correctly located and it will not ride up if correctly adjusted.

As far as where to place the mounts, I strongly recommend going to the manufacturers' websites. They have it all layed out there and it's far better to follow their lead than us doing the "blind leading the blind." Regarding the pictures above, I really hope those are just tacked in and that a full weld bead will be applied. FWIW, the U.S. maker Simpson tests there seatbelt webbing to 5000lbs. How much could our own belt mounts handle? Something to think about
