IRS - How to mount the lower wishbone??
StuartBJ - 22/8/10 at 04:07 PM

Hi Guys,

Please forgive me for being thick here, I don`t have a copy of uncle Ron`s famous book to hand which i`m sure will reveal the answer.

How do I mount the lower wishbone on to the rear hub adapter plate? The view you see below is the offside rear (back face)....and what is confusing me is the tube welded in the bottom. From the look of it a long threaded bar goes al the way through the tube and through the poly bushes, but that also doesn`t sit right with me.

Thanks

you have it about right but it should be a long HT bolt not threaded bar.

Flamez - 22/8/10 at 04:28 PM

Threaded bar on mine no problems, can you get a bolt that long?

StuartBJ - 22/8/10 at 04:46 PM

Thanks Guys..... right I better go buy some threaded bar then LOL

....or a really long bolt

Not sure about the length but MK supply long bolts for their rear wishbones which look just like that.

Really long bolt on mine but mines a haynes roadster so slightly different to yours but a bolt wiil definately be better than studding

Uncle Ron won't help you, that's the original live axle locost book.

The book that deals with IRS is the Haynes Roadster book written by Uncle Chris (although I don't think it shows how to mount the wishbones)

Studded bar is generally made of chocolate. Unless you can get it in a decent grade of material (I'm not sure) dont use it for your suspension.

My Aries is similar and came with suitable bolts (but threaded on either end and I don't actually know what the correct terminology is for those). I would've thought that you should be able to get them from your chassis supplier.

Alan from AGM supplied me with threaded bar with my WLR kit. Check to see that he shouldn't have done the same with you.

Threaded bar is o.k if it's HT, i.e. 8.8 rated. The snag is you can't tell by looking at it as there are no marks unlike bolts, so you might want a long bolt so the IVA man can see the 8.8..

Get a long bolt if you can. Bolts will be marked with the strenth whereas you no way of confirming what threaded bar is. Also if threaded bar does come loose the threads will start wearing the holes a lot quicker than a bolt.

Hi

It's on its way. Is that a section of threaded studding that's on it's way. ?

Cheers Matt

Well the IRS uses the 14mm threaded bar but Alan from AGM has informed me that a couple of IVA tests have confirmed that the material must be appropriatly marked for grade (I assume its 8.8 as a miniumu)... therefore Alan at AGM is running off a batch of very long bolts to replace the offending threaded bar.

So to summerise if you have a 7 or WLR etc and havn`t yet been through the IVA and have threaded bar as part of your IRS this needs to be changed for bolts that display the material rating.

14mm? you sure it's not 12mm? I used M12 x 240 HIGH TENSILE 12.9 ALLEN CAP BOLTS BLACKx 2pcs on eBay (end time 08-Dec-10 09:42:15 GMT), they do them in different lengths.
