Over the weekend I am going to put the weight of my engine on to my chassis for the first time. I don't want to create any local stress areas. How big should I make the mounting plates? Thanks Glan
What ever size you make the plates they still put a big bending load on the lower members what is required is an extra tube at each side to take
the loads to a vertex.
With a spaceframe the loads should always be at vertexes where 3+ tubes meet as the tubes themselves have no strength/stiffness in bending .
It isn't always possible but the loads should be fed in as close as possible to the corners of bays.

And then weld the plate to support the mountings.
