engine mount fabrication
RMarine - 18/6/09 at 09:00 PM

would ther be a reason for no making engine mounts myself?
i want to make my own engine mounts for my aries locost for a 2.0 Zetec engine.
Can you help?

02GF74 - 18/6/09 at 09:05 PM

You are allowed tol make a chassis but according to the BOOK you are not supposed to make your own engine mounts.

just kidding - ofcourse you can.

I had to do this recently - I used 3 mm mild steel strips, 3 of, to weld into I shape.

The ends were bent over and another plate welded on. I have posted pictures somehwere - search for engine mounts by 02GF74.

big_wasa - 18/6/09 at 09:05 PM

Ive made my own, its not hard if you can weld.

I would use 5mm plate for the bits that bolt to the engine. There have been a few that have failed with 3mm.

omega0684 - 18/6/09 at 09:06 PM

obviously wou make the make sure that you get the engine lined up stright and your welding is up to the job!

stevegough - 18/6/09 at 09:08 PM

One word - strength!

Co - incidentally, I'm at just that stage myself - engine now fits, just need to fabricate the mounts.

Now, I can weld (after a fashion) but not well - I'm just a beginner, so I'm going to leave this crucial bit of welding to a pro.

My plan is either:
1... get the steel myself, cut it to fit, tack weld it together, then take it to be welded properly.
or
2... measure and draw what I want, then as for 1, above.

To answer your question - how good is your welding?

HTH, Steve.

I'm no great welder and only have a clark 105 mig, and mine haven't broken yet.

Go fot it.

Try this

RMarine - 18/6/09 at 09:39 PM

I have never tried welding, but I was going to get a welder to learn. I know that it would be cheaper to by the mounts, but once I have learnt to weld I can do other things. The rubber mount, what type should I use?

clairetoo - 18/6/09 at 10:14 PM

I have allways made my own engine mounts - I didnt even use the ones that came with my Fury kit cuz the engine sat too high
I use 5mm plate for the engine end , the thick walled (at least 3mm) tube , with a short piece of the same tube with a thick washer welded on one end at the rubber mount end .
Rover v8 mounts are very good , and can be got off ebay for a fiver a pair
As for welding them yourself - just one word............practice !

Heres mine.

O/S Engine Mount
O/S Engine Mount

Couldnt buy any so made them my self

maartenromijn - 19/6/09 at 06:11 AM

The pdf from Mark show's how it's done. Before welding up, check the alignment of the engine and gearbox.

Daddylonglegs - 19/6/09 at 07:19 AM

Here's mine:

Hope they last!

3mm plate and 40mm x 2.3mm box.

JB

speedyxjs - 20/6/09 at 07:18 PM

#mine are 3mm which is the same as the brackets bolted to the block (original)

stevegough - 20/6/09 at 09:13 PM

Further to my last note, I have made my mounts today
- used 6mm for the flat plates,
3mm walled square tubing,
Land rover rubber blocks.

See more photos in my archive.

As I previously said, I am not good at welding, so they have just been tacked to hold them until a guy I know who can weld properly makes them solid.

I am pretty pleased with them, even though I do say it myself.

Steve.

These are very cheap, easy to use and well up to any engine in a 7.

They look the the ones used by speedyxjs and stevegough

Shouldn't there be some rubber mounts? They look solid.

Correct - not only are they the ones I used, but that is the ebay advert I bought them from - very, very quick service from them, too!

did you tack those together without using any gas as a matter of interest?
Thanks Al

I dont think so - maybe the bottle's run out ? - you are saying that because of the brown dust?

If the welds look like they have lots of craters in them, dimples like a gold ball then it'll be due to lack of gas and when you're welding with no gas it'll tend to 'fizz' instead of 'crackle'. Well, does for me anyway!

Definitely no gas when those weld were done...no wonder you are having problems welding!

I've got Landrover rubbers between the mount and the lower pate

I did mine like DLL's, you could have put another piece of the 40mm box section on top instead of the gusset plate. Does the bottom of the box section hang off your engine plate ? better to have it all on there and put a spacer on top of or under your mount to make up the height loss.

I presume you are talking about mine? yes, the left one 'hangs off the plate by about 2mm - I will get Joel to put a fillet either of weld or a small chunk of metal in first, then weld it. It is still going to be a solid as the Titanic!
