"Work safe" mode?
ShaunB - 15/3/10 at 01:26 PM

Is there anywhere I can set a "work safe" or "avatar blocking" mode?

blakep82 - 15/3/10 at 01:31 PM

are you using internet explorer?

tools, internet options, click the advanced tab. scroll down til you find the 'show pictures' tick box, and untick it. it won't show any pictures though

tegwin - 15/3/10 at 01:31 PM

If you use Firefox... download the web developer addon... it allows you to disable things... including pictures...

iank - 15/3/10 at 01:36 PM

For firefox you can right click an image and select "Block images from locostbuilders" that will block quickly block anything in peoples photo archives which is where most avatars live.

There's also the image block application which will block all images on a site. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5613
But that depends on whether your company allows users to install random plugins.

mads - 15/3/10 at 01:37 PM

is there some option for those who cant change settings or install new applications on work PC's due to administrator rights?

David Jenkins - 15/3/10 at 01:44 PM

This is an issue that comes up now and again. There are a few possible solutions:

1. If you run Firefox there is a plug-in called adblock plus that will allow you to hide specific images, if you don't want to blank out every image from this site. There will be a short period when the dodgy images are displayed, but they will diminish as you block them (takes seconds).

2. ChrisW supplies a button that blocks the avatars. (little chance, as he's busy making a living).

3. People take more care about the size and content of their avatars, and remember that many people look at this site in an office and have bosses with a limited sense of humour!

Apologies for shouting - but I am one of those who likes to look at this forum in a very busy open-plan office.

[Edited on 15/3/10 by David Jenkins]

Fozzie - 15/3/10 at 01:51 PM

All content on this car building site should be work/home/school/college/swmbo/kid safe .....

If a particular avatar is causing problems, u2u the owner and ask them to use a more suitable/safe avatar/picture.

If no response, then u2u me ......

This thread only goes to prove that this site does and will get blocked, be it by work or schools and colleges which really defeats what this site is about ...learning......
and not because some of you think that I 'kick off' just because I am female....

Fozzie ..... Admin

D Beddows - 15/3/10 at 01:55 PM

Fat chance of Option 3 happening lol - although I must admit it is a LOT better than it has been......... FlackMonkey is now really the prime offender, yes they are very attractive young ladies BUT the internet is stuffed with sites where you can 'get your rocks off' if that's what you want 100% with Mr Jenkins on this one, and it's not just at work.........

blakep82 - 15/3/10 at 01:56 PM

erm, shouldn't people be er, working at work?

Alan B - 15/3/10 at 01:57 PM

Here's thought for people at work...

Why not do some work, instead of surfing?

HTH Alan

David Jenkins - 15/3/10 at 02:01 PM

I must admit that Flak's is one of the worst offendors - lovely to look at, but would be less obvious is the 150 pixel rule was applied...

(Sorry David!)

As for the 'at work' bit - I browse during lunchbreaks, just when everyone is walking around the desks...

D Beddows - 15/3/10 at 02:03 PM

100% agree - so why don't we (ie you and Chris lol) start a policy that purely 'girly' type avatars are banned? if a maximum size avatar can be policed why not?

LOL, I can imagine the next few posts on this one

Edited to say: As with Mr Jenkins when I'm at work I don't have much spare time to look on here but for a bit of a change while I'm eating my lunch...... plus my kids are convinced I'm looking at a porn or dating site when I'm on here which isn't wonderful LOL

[Edited on 15/3/10 by D Beddows]

MikeR - 15/3/10 at 02:07 PM

sat waiting for redundancy with nothing to do as i already have another job lined up ..... what would you do, i can only twiddle my thumbs for so long!

plus I was allowed to browse during breaks. This was a win / win situation. The company won cause i was accessible at my desk and I got to read my favourite web site. Although more than once i had to apologise for the pictures on my screen as someone walked past in the open plan office.

daviep - 15/3/10 at 02:14 PM

I think that along with banning anything that maybe offensive to anybody we should also be policing poor spelling and grammar.

eddie99 - 15/3/10 at 02:18 PM

Lol, i agree with the if your at work, you should be working. And if your in your lunch break. Why does it matter? Very rarely are there any non work/home safe things.

cd.thomson - 15/3/10 at 02:20 PM

lets face it, theres more "obscene" material on the middle shelf of a news agents than there is here.

Id like to see you ban cleavage from real life

And having any one of the "Nut's" magazines on your desk will see you dragged in front of your manager for a major (and career limiting) chat in most big companies, certainly in the offices.

It's a non argument - we don't all work in environments where you can do what you like so long as it's legal.

Frankly the attitude of 'I'll do what I like' and 'well don't browse at work' is extremely selfish.

cd.thomson - 15/3/10 at 02:44 PM

do the same organisations ban women and smiling?

would these oppressive corporations also not drag you to a similar tribunal for pootling around on locostbuilders in the first place?

By middle shelf I was thinking more of T3 which often has an attractive lady on the front, but I very much doubt youd get dragged to the front office for a gadget magazine.

I know I'm new here and all that but CRIKEY! I've not seen anything offensive on here yet. Have any of you watched day time telly? Much more suggestive imagery every day.

Now if some one put up some baps on display I'd agree whole heartedly, but an attractive young lady (or gent) does no harm now does it? Advertising is based upon it! We are into cars and guess what is used to sell us our goodies!

On the other hand we could be like New Labour and ban and criminalise everything! Watch out for the thought police, NO don't think about it they'll get you for sure!

its a very good point. and as i read it, the image below comes on my telly at 3.20 in the afternoon, 3 half naked birds getting a spray tan, and then a half naked bloke does the same thing. its an advert for some tv program, but they show the same amount as some avartars on here.

i won't post the actual photo, but here a link for those of you who want to see what i'm talking about

No women and smiling are completely ok, the corporations are hardly oppressive and many have no problems with web browsing in your own time. They are however risk averse and do object to being hauled in front of tribunals by anyone claiming there was an oppressive 'male centric' attitude that meant they weren't promoted. It costs them >£10k even if they win (more if it's a senior manager), more if the no-win-no-fee sharks are involved. The fact that a lot of senior HR managers are women isn't going to help with any arguments.

Have you worked in an open plan office in a white collar job? Certainly doesn't sound like it as any magazine that's a bit risqué and left laying about would certainly will cause negative comments and discussions about professionalism with a line manager in most of the places I've worked in the last 20 years.

I currently work in IT/Data control in an open plan procurement office where my immediate management tree are all women, yes.

I refer back to my original point that a gadget magazine with some leg on the front cover is not the same as a lads mag where the content is identifiably sexist and the same is true here.

I don't believe it's a one off image that would see you facing your manager, but the brand/publication itself. In my opinion your argument is fallacious as you're not comparing like with like.

So......all of you still batting on about work and top/mid shelf mags etc ..... don't really care about the schools colleges and the kids being able to actually learn something from us petrol heads?

FWIW magazines like 'Nuts' and dodgy day-time tv, aren't officially allowed at educational establishments ..... they are banned too ....

The internet filters as far as educational facilities are concerned, are quite strict .....

It does seem as though a lot of business's along with educational facilities do have filters and protocol to follow .... some times you really do have to take the 'self' out of it, and look at the bigger picture .... keeping in mind of course that this is also a global site, and what may be acceptable in this country, may not be so in others .......

It can be a tough call...

Hmmmm..... so what you are saying is that because some people want certain types of avatars, everyone else has to use the printable version, thus stopping them looking at, for example, a build related query where only a picture will do?
Or not being able to answer another builders query because they 'have' to turn off the 'display pictures' option...because someone wants to display a 'certain type' of avatar?

Disappointing ....

nope, but it certainly means they can go on looking at for the rest of today at least if they come across something 'unsuitable'. besides, in the print view, pictures in the thread still show, but not avatars

takes a LOT to offend me. needs to be something personal against me, everything else is fine. some people might find it offensive to have 2 fingers stuck up at them. not me though. i make my own judgement on whether something is suitable to be done at home or at work etc.

Ahhh, I am all for free speech etc and having whatever avatar you want, but if it causes people problems then I'll happily change it. If anyone had U2U'd me about it then I would have changed it long ago, but I have never had a single complaint....

You wont find many people more open minded than me, but I also understand that there are a lot of people who dont see things the same way. Trust me, I work with a few closed minded people....

Steve McQueen isn't even looking at the camera and his arm is aimed away from the camera, he isn't looking or aiming his hand at you .... it is hardly a 'sexual' image in the greater scheme of things......

Again.....some of the replies above are still thinking of the 'self' .... as in, what is or isn't acceptable to yourselves ..... not what may or maybe offensive to other users in the world or other types of facilities that look to this site for inspiration and guidance.....

I am with Flak in this .... it isn't about your self, but having the fortitude to think of others ......
What I cannot understand is, why no one has u2u'd either him (if that was the offending avatar), or me, but chose to make an issue about it on the forum ....

No, I avoid daytime TV, one of the reasons I don't watch it is because of the "suggestive imagery". The difference is that daytime TV is sold using the suggestive imagery, therefore it's part and parcel of daytime TV. This site would carry on unaffected by a girly-avatar ban..

This site isn't a democracy in any shape or form, it's free to all (none trading) users.
This gives ChrisW (or his little wizards) the right to enforce any rule of his choosing[1].

Personally I prefer none-girly avatars 'cos my 8 yr-old boy is always looking over my shoulder, the girly avatars make it look like I'm looking at a goth/girly/dating site It's the size of the avatars that annoys me more than anything, on my old laptop or my phone the screen becomes an unuable width and I have to scroll from side to side.

For the record ChrisW said "As a reminder, we expect all avatars to be no more than 150 pixels high or wide."

It's a pity people don't abide by it IMHO

[1] Including the permanent banning of a member and the posting of statements made to look like they'd been said by the banned member (I'm pretty sure this isn't even legal). But you have to take the rough with the smooth

Whoa, seemed to have rocked the boat a bit here!

For the record I personally had no issue with Bianca, but there are probably people in my office who might have, hence looking for a solution. I've used other forums in the past that had a "Show Avatars y/n" option that presumably got stored as part of the site cookie, hence allowing different work & home configs.

Today was actually the first time I accessed this site from work, as I had one of those rare 15 min breaks to eat my lunch! My work PC is pretty locked down, so I'm limited to IE (thanks to those that suggested the Firefox options).

Sorry David - didn't mean to pick on you! Just the way it came out during the discussion. You'd probably get away with 150x150... and one of the more subtle photos!

As for Firefox - I'm in the same boat as far as work is concerned, as we're officially a Microsoft-using company (we have some links with them). The software we can load on the machine is strictly controlled (monitored remotely by the IT bods). If I was allowed to use Firefox I'd probably not complain, as all of the dodgy photos would be selected for blocking.

As Fozzie said though - it's not a case of personal freedom to do what you want - it's respect for others and their environment they have to work in.

We also have had youngsters of secondary school age using and contributing to this site - possibly from their school. Others have kids looking over their shoulder at home.

Strontium Dog - 15/3/10 at 08:48 PM

I must have missed something here! So where are all the lewd and lascivious pics then? Or is it that a picture of a girl with her face showing is frowned upon because as a "global site" we might be viewed by someone with a funny headdress that doesn't like it! Theres being PC and there's being a prude too!

To be honest, I have kids and don't want to see anything too suggestive on here either, but the point is I haven't seen anything to worry me! I am involved with several car clubs (both local with whom I compete and national/"global) and I thought it was refreshing to see people here were not calling each other gay boys or posting questionable pics in a male dominated arena. You should look at some other car club sites!

You will also perhaps note that although this site is free there are encouragements to pay up. I did so before ever posting as I like to support a good site. It's not that I am trying to rock any boats here but it does not seem to be a bad place as it is. My 9 yr old daughter is free to look here anytime and I don't feel I need to monitor her when she does. If you discourage all forms of banter etc purely because it is not to your taste, rather than distasteful, then it's gonna be a sterile and boring place PDQ

All IMHO of course

alistairolsen - 15/3/10 at 09:09 PM

TBH I think my employers would have more of an issue about me openly browsing the internet than the odd picture. Just keep the window small and scroll past the pad pics swiftly

And to those with work pcs which suck, try firefox portable!

There are forum rules which you agreed to when you made the phone call to register......

This is NOT about one persons taste or being prudish ..... perhaps if you read the thread, this is not about banter, but avatars ...and not started by me .... but a male locost builder...because of viewing problems....and has been an issue on and off for a long time, long before you joined a few weeks ago ... and it is a car builders forum, not for exclusive use by males or even adult males ....

Aha! I see that free speech is frowned upon on here then. What a shame! I have been hassled by the Avatar Police even though plenty of others on this thread are doing the same as me but are allowed there slightly oversized pic. I can only assume that my attempt at a reasoned and considered argument has fallen foul of the admin here.

It's not like a burning rally car (a picture I took myself) is explicit sexism now is it? Or is it? I did not realise when I first found and perused this site that is was run by a few for a few but it's becoming clear to me now.

Personally I like to share my skill set and facilities with others and enjoy some humour in the process. I am not racist, sexist or any thing else for that matter, but like many I think the PC thing is totally OTT in this country.

Any way I'll sort my offensive avatar while many others are left oversize and consider I've learnt my lesson.

Dear oh dear ^ ^ ^ avatars are NOT 'free speech' .... read the help pages which have been there since the site began .... it states ......Avatars....150 pixels wide ...

As was said earlier in this thread if Flaks avatar was smaller as in the sites recommendations, it wouldn't have been so obvious and more than likely would NOT have caused a problem .......

It would be nice if newbies like yourself, who only registered on this site 17 days ago.....familiarised yourself with the guidelines of which compared to the majority of other sites are very few, before you start to hit the keyboard moaning.......

Guys

This is exactly the arguement I wrote about yesterday, then lost my post. Seems as admins we're damned if we do and damned if we don't.

However, the rules do state a maximum of 150x150px avatars, and we will be enforcing that again as of last night.

quote:
it is strange that some can have large avatars and not be challenged....

quote:
I have been hassled by the Avatar Police even though plenty of others on this thread are doing the same as me but are allowed there slightly oversized pic. I can only assume that my attempt at a reasoned and considered argument has fallen foul of the admin here.

These are exactly the kind of idiotic responses that cause me to make the statement above. Did you even read the warning? I'm guessing not, because it clearly gives you 24 hours to fix the problem yourself before the system automatically deleted it. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that maybe those with bigger avatars have either:

1. Not logged on yet and seen the message
2. Not dealt with the problem yet, but are still in their 24 hour period
3. Are too lazy/don't know how to deal with it and are just waiting for the system to delete their avatar for them

Now, please go and read the announcement made 8 months ago, and the update last night. These are the rules (and have nothing to do with 'free speech' as you put it) so please either put up or shut up, as Fozzie and are are fed up with people whining on about it.

Cheers, Chris
