Whos going or planning to on October
Newlands?

Bought ball joints etc; will need advice on
wishbones.

Pcd on ford axles springs to mind.

Surrey Dave - 19/9/04 at 10:20 PM

Should be!

Deckman001 - 19/9/04 at 10:43 PM

Yeah, about time i got out !! he he

Jason

Ben_Copeland - 20/9/04 at 05:22 AM

Yeh, perhaps i'll be able to make this one... tho i'm in Newcastle from the Sat 2nd so maybe i'll make a walton at end of october

James - 20/9/04 at 08:33 AM

Should be there.

Trueblue,

Wishbones are pretty simple to do. But don't do them before you've done the chassis. The wishbones are too 'mission critical' to risk making before you've had the welding practice of making the chassis.
Just make a *decent* jig out of MDF and remember to get the castor correct on the top/front wishbones (it's wrong in The Book). If you're using Cortina uprights I believe it's 22mm, if Sierra then it's 25mm but I'm only half remembering those figures.

Also, see the post by Bass on the following link:
http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=2080

it's a good idea and worked well for me.

As for PCD of Ford hubs- it's 108mm.

HTH,

James

EDIT: Changed PCD to avoid confusion- cheers Ned!

[Edited on 21/9/04 by James]

ned - 20/9/04 at 09:11 AM

James, check your figures i think ford pcd is 108

I'll have just arrived in rhodes, so no chance of making it to newlands, sorry guys

James, if I give you the money, can you get my indicators of jason if he's there?

cheers,

Ned.

Jasper - 20/9/04 at 12:06 PM

Should be there too....

And Hicost - have a great time you git

bob - 20/9/04 at 01:38 PM

Hicost

Can you get online over there, would be nice to know how your getting on and what the misserable old buggers are up too.

bcracknell - 21/9/04 at 09:25 AM

is it the Saturday 2nd or sunday 3rd?

what time? 10ish as per http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=15900

Deckman001 - 21/9/04 at 09:54 AM

Hi ya, It's always the first Sunday of the month, the eager ones get there anytime after 9 ish, as there's not usually a queue for the tea's then Although time is dependant on the weather

ChrisJLW - 21/9/04 at 12:35 PM

Got my first IAM observed run on the 3rd. Will see you une autre fois.

Why do car clubs have to meet on the first Sunday of the month? Both MR2DC and IAM (if you can call it a car club) do!

Jasper - 21/9/04 at 02:14 PM

Cos it's the only way we can remember it

ChrisJLW - 21/9/04 at 02:18 PM

Fair e'nuf!

Will have to talk nicely to my IAM observer and see if we can re-arrange. (Yeah right!)

theconrodkid - 21/9/04 at 04:04 PM

we normally meet at walton bridge the other sundays, its the only time i get a decent meal

trueblue - 21/9/04 at 10:09 PM

Hi James thanks for the pointers in making
the wishbones.

What prompted my question on the ford pcd was I compared my fiesta wheels;

13" with the escort back end , seemed to be no great shakes there.

However as I checked the holes in said wheel with front hubs that just happened to be sierra;they did not appear to be compatible.

Will bring my sierra hub to compare against a wheel just in case I've missed something.

Trueblue

Ben_Copeland - 22/9/04 at 05:41 AM

My mk1 Escort back end and sierra front hubs have the same wheel bolt alignment. Cant imagine how yours are different ??

ned - 22/9/04 at 08:57 AM

the offset (hub flange to wheel centreline) may be different between escort and sierra, i can't remember though.

Ned.

bob - 22/9/04 at 10:15 AM

I think the ONE of the problems here is the fiesta wheels,i fear they have to go steve.

James - 23/9/04 at 09:13 AM

How can you say that Bob???! I'm shocked at you!

I mean, some 1983 13" 1.0 Fiesta steels will look effing brilliant!

Ditch 'em Steve!

James

donut - 24/9/04 at 05:46 PM

I should be there (if i'm still allowed)

Ben_Copeland - 24/9/04 at 07:20 PM

Yes, most likely be the offset... Front wheel drive wheels are no good on a rear wheel drive car ! Get some Sierra wheels if you want to be really cheap.. cough, sorry want to be really locost

trueblue - 25/9/04 at 08:18 PM

I was trying to be really locost (TIGHT like scrooge) in using what i had.

however i will still bring the hubs along as
i am curious just to see if my sandblasting and painting has made any difference to the fit.

This is all getting rather exciting; maybe its another excuse to junk some other bits.

Clear garage approaching faster.!!!

Might even get around to having a play with the welder.

If i can start this side of xmas before there are other distractions.

See you all sinday, should be sunday
depends whats about.

Trueblue

bob - 25/9/04 at 09:52 PM

THATS IT,not going.

I fear i may need sectioning

bob - 26/9/04 at 10:27 AM

After a cup of coffee and some counciling at walton mountain i have relented

Fozzie - 26/9/04 at 06:58 PM

Any time Bob!

See ya Sunday!

what did i miss?

Surrey Dave - 27/9/04 at 12:45 PM

The Sierra wheels with the large holes could look pretty cool , I was going to use them but the offsets where wrong.

Also (contraversially) steel wheels are often lighter than (lightweight) alloy ones!!

Could be a good thread , put together a database of wheel weights............................

Ben_Copeland - 27/9/04 at 12:47 PM

Plus they can stand up to being bumped up and down curbs lol (women take note!!!)

trueblue - 28/9/04 at 08:49 AM

Dave,

Pardon my enquiry but how are the offsets wrong?

I will be using sierra wheels now; have to speak to Ben,

Will bring half shaft along to compare as Im getting confused here!

Trueblue

ned - 28/9/04 at 10:22 AM

if halfshafts confuse you (they fit in the axle casing ) just think how bad it'll be if you ever start welding up the chassis, think fu1+2 guys

Ned.

Surrey Dave - 28/9/04 at 01:23 PM

The Sierra wheels have there main offset to the inside ,so on a book chassis with an Escort axle they will rub on the chassis without spacers.

Typical wider Escort mk2 wheels have the larger offset to the outside.

I know this 'cos I had a set off Sierra steel wheels on my car while I was building it........

Deckman001 - 28/9/04 at 02:10 PM

'Pepper pots' also have the offset towards the axle and therefore rub on the trailing arms RS Alloys are correct tho !!

Jason

phelpsa - 29/9/04 at 08:27 PM

What luck!! My room mate @ Bradfield lives walking distance from Newlands Corner. I'll have to stay over at his house one weekend when you are there!

James - 1/10/04 at 02:27 PM

Hmmm, greasy egg and bacon bap!

I'm already moist with anticipation!

Seeya there,

James

James - 1/10/04 at 02:43 PM

Have a feeling we might all get a bit moist actually- BBC Weather says it gonna rain.

Do we wanna go someplace else instead- like over the road?

Cheers,
James

Deckman001 - 1/10/04 at 02:49 PM

Heard the same thing about the weather, i think hicost must be driving through it now !! over the road sounds better, (or box hill !) but doesn't it open alot later ?

Jason

James - 1/10/04 at 03:10 PM

Let's just say normal place unless it's raining- then over the road.

Box Hill will be open but I don't think we should change location now. There's too much possibility of people planning to come not checking here first.

Cheers,

James

bob - 1/10/04 at 03:14 PM

box hill opens at 9 i think, every chance we will visit the hill nov/dec/jan as we did before.

I'm doubtfull for sunday morn now as i'm picking up some ali for a boot box, this 9i feel is more important than having to suffer you ugly lot and stupid questions (thats apart from james who owes me a tenner)

bob - 1/10/04 at 03:29 PM

Deckman001 - 1/10/04 at 03:32 PM

Well I'm sure even a lazy fekker like you could cope with buying a burger in one place and then carrying it 50 feet to the other, but as it happens 'over the road' is a full-on, honest to God, cafe!

I've not been in to eat but stuck my head round the door once this time last year when looking for a meeting place for us- it seemed alright. I've no idea of price though.

I could even try and go up tomorrow if I get a chance to check it out again.

Cheers,

James

Jasper - 3/10/04 at 08:53 AM

Oooooops, got back late from Germany last nite and completely forgot about this mornings meet - but as it's p*ssing down I'm rather glad!

Surrey Dave - 3/10/04 at 12:25 PM

Here's the October meet at Newlands corner ,there was briefly a nice Luego Velocity also in attendance..........................

None of the " you dont need weather equipment" mob arrived: Rescued attachment newlands oct.jpg

bob - 3/10/04 at 12:51 PM

Whats donut doing there,i thought we had blackballed him

James - 3/10/04 at 12:56 PM

There were so many cops there they took away the barricades we'd put up for him!

See, I said at the time the avatar got put up (by ChrisW) my hair doesn't look like that normally:
<<<---------------

Instead, now it looks like I've joined the paras!

Hope you enjoyed the ride Jason! (And the one in Dave's car).

Seeya,
James
(still freezing!)

P.S. Where the hell's Conrod? First time I've known him to miss a brekkie?

[Edited on 3/10/04 by James]

theconrodkid - 3/10/04 at 03:18 PM

i have a car not a boat,thats why i didnt turn up

trueblue - 3/10/04 at 05:40 PM

Thanks for all the advice on offsets etc.

Glad I got that cleared up, I had visions of
two different wheel types to accomodate the axle sets I ended up with.

Another question!

What types of steering racks are more widely available?

Presumably escort types will disappear soon; I'm trying to use more withit components to update the design.

I didnt turn up because i dont like anybody except james cos he owes me a tenner

Daves polo rad is nice though

Ben_Copeland - 3/10/04 at 08:47 PM

You know the only reason you didn't turn up, is cos i couldn't be there

bob - 3/10/04 at 11:14 PM

yes ben thats the reason

James - 4/10/04 at 12:58 PM

Bob,
I'm surprised you didn't come just to see lovely Dave's lovely radiator- it's lovely!

Cortina- in fact is better than Escort as BJ's in better position.

Capri is another option.

Sierra- but you'll need to chop the middle out of it (to bring the mounts inside the car and also to reduce bump-steer) and then extend the arms. MK can do this for you.

A lot of other cars have the rack mounted behind the hubs and these are no good so be careful what you get from the scrappy.

Cheers,

James
